Catching the Photography Bug…..Again

I purchased my Nikon D80 back in 2007. It’s not a professional camera, but it’s what I could afford at the time and my skill level didn’t warrant paying thousands of dollars for a professional level camera. The D80 has been very good to me though. It’s a mid-level DSLR and at 10 years old it’s still going strong.

Photography has been a hobby of mine for quite some time and when I first got ahold of the Nikon I was taking pictures all the time. Nature, skylines, and other scenic type pictures were always something I was pretty good at. People, not so much. But that didn’t stop me from trying to get paid for taking photos. I did a few weddings (my skill level was always an up front disclaimer) and some outdoors portrait sessions, but I never could quite find my niche. Why? Because I didn’t take the time to learn about lighting, composition, exposure, aperture, etc…. and I also didn’t take the time to learn about the camera. I went into it with a “learn as I go” mentality, but the learning part never happened. What did happen though was what has happened many times in my life. It became “too hard” so I got frustrated and gave up promising myself that I would never again do photography as anything other than a hobby. I decided to step back, put the camera away for a while and come back to it later. Later ended up being several years. Which brings us to the present…..

My sister-in-law Christy is having a baby and she’s due this May. I’m so excited because I’m going to be an Aunt! The coolest aunt EVER by the way. Although, I’m sure Emily (Christy’s sister) would argue that point..ha! A couple of weeks ago Christy asked me if I would take some maternity pictures for her and then newborn pictures after the baby is born. Of course I said yes, but immediately felt tons of pressure! Christy knows I’m not a professional, but I still want to create the best, most amazing photos I can for her so I pulled out my trusty Nikon, dusted it off and started taking pictures again.

It started with my cat, the dog, random objects around the house…anything I could photograph which has led to a crash course on camera settings and Photoshop. I’m not going to become an amazing photographer overnight, but being asked to take newborn pictures has stirred up an excitement to learn and study.

I feel like this blog post is just another one of my ramblings, but there really is a point. I’m posting to show off a couple of pictures I took yesterday that I’m really proud of and to thank my sister-in-law, Christy, for causing me to catch the photography bug again.

Thanks for reading and here are the photos I mentioned above. This is Lily, my Dad and Step-Mom’s Boston Terrier. I edited them in Photoshop Elements using actions I purchased from Greater Than Gatsby. I’m pretty happy with them and I’m excited to get out and keep shooting! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!
